Hello Mr. Bulgarian. Just to say I live with 3 Bulgarian families around me, not to mention Lithuanian and Polish. Because black and brown Swedes are blamed for the unrest produced by political disinvestment, they are not only missing out on much-needed programs of affordable housing, living-wage employment, and youth support. For they are also forced to carry the psychological and physical burden of racialized surveillance and intrusive policing. There seems to be lots of confusion about my favourite vegetable, swede. Talking to strangers is not our specialty, and if you purposely sit next to us on the bus while there are other seats not taken, we might take you for either a drunk or a mentally instable weirdo. Swedes are usually not very open to strangers and there is a culture of keeping to oneself. This certainly is much colder than many other cultures and I guess it can be a bit of a shock if you don't expect it. I think the "Swedes are just plain anti-social" thing is exagerrated. Many Swedes are friendly and interested in finding out more about other people's culture, they're just either self-conscious, unsure about how to handle the situation (unsure what to say or afraid to offend), or the language barrier gets in the way. Swedes don’t usually go overboard in this department, so don’t expect to be told you’re wonderful.
